How to Secure & Remove Earrings with Safety Back & Other Designs

Earring back stuck? Read on to learn how to remove earrings with safety back, screw back and other styles. We’ll highlight the various types of earring backs out there and discuss instructions for putting them on and taking them off.

Types of Earring Backs

Safety Back Earrings

Safety back earrings are popular among babies and children. Also known as starter earrings, these earrings are characterized by a locking clutch design and a rounded back. Safety back earrings are some of the safest earring backs (hence their name) and do a good job of securely holding earrings in place.

How to Put On Safety Back Earrings

  1. Hold the front part of the earring.
  2. Push the back towards the post until it locks.

How to Remove Earrings with Safety Back

  1. Hold the post of the earring with your index finger and thumb.
  2. Firmly pull the back off with your other hand.
Screw Back Earrings

Similar to safety back earrings, screw back earrings feature a covered back that protects the post. The post features a threaded design, which allows it to screw into the back for secure wear. These screw earrings are commonly seen on babies and children, but teens and adults may wear them as well.

How to Put On Screw Back Earrings

  1. Screw the back by rotating it to the right.
  2. Do this until the back screws onto the post.
  3. Do not over screw the back because it could damage the piece and/or post.

How to Remove Screw Back Earrings

  1. Hold the post of the earring with your index finger and thumb.
  2. Gently unscrew the back by rotating it to the left.
  3. Unscrew until the back slides off the post.
Butterfly Stud Earrings

Push back earrings, also known as butterfly back earrings because of their shape, feature a simple back that is pushed onto the earring post. The post pokes through the back but is held securely in place thanks to small grooves etched in the post. This is a classic design that can be found in all age groups, especially teens and adults.

How to Put On Butterfly Back Earrings

  1. Hold the front part of the earring.
  2. Gently push the back towards the post.

How to Remove Butterfly Back Earrings

  1. Hold the post of the earring.
  2. Firmly pull the butterfly back until it comes off the post.

I recently got my second ear lob piercing! I feel like because I am a sweller I told the lady I’d like longer posts and they seemed Long but I think she tightened them too tight so now my right ear won’t heal correctly because the earring is cutting into my ear . I believe it’s the screw off but am I able to unscrew it a little to give my ear more room?

I thought mine was a screw back, but it’s actually the ball in the front that screws off.

My grand daughter has the screw back earrings and she got one off but the other will not come off. Any suggestions? Does a doctor need to do it or a jeweler?
