Sensitive Skin & Earrings - Tips for Buying the Best Earrings for Sensitive Ears

  1. Choose hypoallergenic baby earrings. You may be asking yourself, “What metal is best for sensitive ears?” The best earrings for sensitive ears are those that are made of pure, precious metals such as:

Rhodium Plated - Rhodium plated jewelry is a relative of platinum, making it an excellent choice for babies with sensitive ears. Since rhodium plating can coat a variety of metals, it works well as a type of hypoallergenic jewelry for babies.
Sterling Silver - Sterling silver is an allow of silver containing 92.5% by mass of silver and 7.5% by mass of other metals, usually copper.
Solid Gold - Gold should be at least 14 karats to ensure it contains the highest amount of pure metals. 14 karat and 18 karat gold plated jewelry is also a good option, thanks to its hypoallergenic properties.

When shopping for hypoallergenic baby earrings, be on the lookout for nickel-free kids earrings, as nickel is a well-known allergen for many children (and adults!). You’ll also want to avoid any sort of cheap alloy materials, as these can cause further irritation in babies and toddlers.

  1. Keep up with cleaning baby ear piercings. Knowing how to take care of baby ear piercings is extremely important, especially since baby ears are so sensitive. After your baby’s ears are pierced, make sure to closely follow the care instructions given to you by the piercer. This may include cleaning your child’s ears with an antiseptic product and turning your child’s earrings every so often. Follow your doctors advice on cleaning, but it is usually includes gently rotate the child's earrings and clean the front and back of the earlobes with rubbing alcohol, an antiseptic product, or an antibiotic at least twice a day.

Once the piercing has healed (usually after 6-8 weeks), you may be able to swap out the earrings for another pair. Again, these instructions vary for everyone, so make sure to follow your specific care instructions as closely as possible, and consult with your pediatrician if you have any questions.

  2. Take care of your baby’s jewelry. Caring for baby jewelry is vital for preventing your baby’s ears from becoming infected or developing a sensitivity or allergy. Fortunately, with the right supplies and information, cleaning your baby’s jewelry can be quite simple and inexpensive.
